Citra Crashes almost immediately after loading ROM

#1

Issue:
I’m experiencing almost immediate crashes after loading a ROM. Fire Emblem Awakening included in log/screenshot, but the same issues are present in the other game I have tried, Ocarina of Time 3D. Sometimes I can get all the way to character creation in Awakening, other times it will crash two seconds into the opening movie. In the logged/screenshotted session here, I got to the title screen, so about average for me.

System Information

Here’s some issues I found with your log that might help.

  • Enabling Accurate Multiplication is recomended for accurate emulation.
#3

Following the suggestion by @CitraBot, I have tried enabling accurate multiplication, but the problems persist.

#4

Try restarting your computer, if the issues persists upload your log again.

#5

@bio3c, I’ve restarted, but the problems persist. In the session logged here, I made it into Awakening’s character creation before it crashed, but that’s nothing new. There doesn’t seem to be any specific point that triggers the crashes, they just always happen soon. citra_log.txt (131.0 KB)

Run citra-qt as admin, see if that has any effect.

#8

@bio3c, I just tried running citra-qt as admin, but still no change in behavior.

#9

Try reinstalling citra and/or try citra canary, i’m unable to reproduce these issues on nightly-1193.

#10

@bio3c, after uninstalling Citra as well as deleting its folder in AppData/Roaming, I have reinstalled Citra nightly and canary builds. No change in behavior in either nightly 1193 or canary 1208.

#11

Did install any DLC or Updates? try running citra in portable mode (simply create folder name user inside citra’s install folder, where citra-qt.exe is located, and copy your nand folder to it)

Now when you open citra again all config will point to the user folder you’ve just made.
configure citra again and launch your game, see if it works.

#12

Sorry, had to leave for a bit. Okay, @bio3c, I’ve tried running in portable mode, which I had no idea you could even do so thanks for that. Unfortunately no change, I’m still crashing.

#13

I’m about to take my portable Citra installation (thanks again) and ROM, and go test them on my brother’s PC. Will post results when done.

#14

Okay, so interesting developments…

I took the portable install @bio3c showed me how to make and my Fire Emblem Awakening ROM over to my brother’s computer to test, and it worked. Flawlessly. I played through the prologue and first stage with no issues whatsoever. So the question is, what is it about my rig that is making the emulator crash and burn so much? Here are system specs for comparison:

My rig (Citra crashes and burns):

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home 1809
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • Motherboard: MSI B450-A Pro
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4 @ 3000
  • GPU: NVidia/Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 Ti

His rig (Citra works great):

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home 1803
  • CPU: Intel Core I7 2600K
  • Motherboard: Some kind of ASUS, I don’t know…
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR3 @ 1600
  • GPU: NVidia/MSI Geforce GTX 1050 Ti

Anyone have any insight into what the problem is?

i have no idea, your drivers are up to date and your log doesn’t show anything wrong. check your windows installation/system for problems or errors, and try updating your system. check any opened applications (discord, steam, etc) and close them before launching citra, and if you have an antivirus (including defender) install/active, add an exception for citra-qt.exe.

also try running citra by downloading it manually, nightly or canary, extract and run using portable mode.

#16

Well, I thought I might be onto something when I discovered my BIOS was outdated, but flashing to the latest version from MSI as well as updating my chipset drivers has accomplished… diddly where Citra is concerned.

#17

does the issue persists? there’s only two things that may be causing this issue, your system is corrupted somehow or your ROMs are corrupted, so redump your ROMs:
Dumping Game Cartridges
Dumping Installed Titles
