General Question about the Rules of using citra

About a week ago, my friend introduced me to an emulator called citra, allowing people to play Nintendo games on pc and Mac. first time into the emulator world, it is always good to first know the rules before using citra. I have already read the citra community rules that talked about how we’re not allowed to post certain things, But I also wanted to know what are the rules when using citra. Are we allowed to use any ROM, and are there certain regulations that I should be aware of, and what type of support we can post. Thankyou!

Citra is, in essence, a tool. Support with said tool depends on the guidelines we have set for the tool, which are mostly based on US law. Guidelines that you’ve already read. As for the other part of your message:

Just like with any other tool, the regulations that you are subject to when using said tool are bound to your local laws and regulations. However, since Citra is US based, we follow US based laws regarding the use of the tool. Hence, when asking support with Citra, you have to abide by what is considered legal in the US, not wherever you are from.

To give you a more clear example, some countries have copyright laws that allow users to legally download somebody else’s archival dump of a game, should they already own an original copy of said game. This is seen as piracy in the US, as the law there states that you only have a right to an archival dump of a piece of software provided that it was generated from your original copy.

If the user in the example above downloaded a ROM off of the internet and asked for support with Citra, regardless of their nationality or the legality of their local laws, we would treat it as piracy and therefore retract support.

So in short, so long as you follow US laws as Citra is US based, we’ll have no reason not to provide support to you.

Yes, thankyou, So do we have to own a 3ds in order to play citra?

For the dumping process a 3DS is required. Though, the 3DS doesn’t have to be yours. It is simply a dumping tool. The cartridges do have to be yours though. For e-shop purchases, you obviously need to own a 3DS though, since those can’t be dumped on somebody else’s 3DS.

What does e-shop purchases mean, Sorry for having so many questions!

And also, is there a guide to how to dump a game and import it to citra in some way for Mac?

E-shop purchases = installed titles. Games bought on the Nintendo e-shop and downloaded to your 3DS.

As for dumping, we have guides for dumping everything you need. The only things you need are a 3DS (2DS), a way to read and write to your 3DS’ SD–Card (like an SD-Card slot or equivalent SD-Card to USB adapter) and the game you wish to dump (either on cartridge or installed from the e-shop.

Please refer to our game dumping guides.
For Cartridges: Dumping Game Cartridges - Citra
For Installed Titles: Dumping Installed Titles - Citra
To dump DLC and Updates, use this guide Dumping Updates and DLCs - Citra and install the results through File -> Install CIA...

I noticed when searching up “how to play Pokémon ultra sun and moon on pc/Mac”, a lot of YouTube videos link ROMs in their description, is that also called piracy and are these ROMs not allowed to use? Just to double check, thanks!

Or I’ll just use my brother’s 3DS.

The only ROMs that you’re legally allowed to use in an emulator are those that were generated from your own original copy of the game (cartridge or installed title). This means that downloading ROMs off of the internet is piracy, regardless of the site.

Yes, the guide was very helpful and I finally successfully dumped my games, it was a little comfusing since I was using the Mac, but I figured it out. it’s way better to play on a Big Mac screen instead of a small screen on the 3ds, thank-you very much.

Hi again, A quick question, does citra support macOS Monterey or Mojave? Because I’m planning on updating to these new “versions”.

Right now I’m using macOS High Sierra

Mojave should be fine, but Monterey reportedly has some issues with Citra.
