Is there any way I can lower the resolution in citra so my games run smoother?
Yes, there is. Go to Emulation > Configure > Graphics and change the internal resolution to whatever you like.
Just note that Citra is more dependent on your CPU, not the GPU, so the performance increase will be minimal while doing this.
