Pokemon Moon Crashes Citra on Startup

Issue:
When trying to launch Pokemon Moon, Citra pauses briefly and then closes without an error message. I’m able to run other Pokemon games such as Ultra Sun without issue. I’ve checked a number of similar threads and tried some of the recommended fixes there, but none so far have worked. As a note, I’m deliberately using an older version of Citra Nightly (listed below) because newer versions have not been running other Pokemon games successfully. I’d appreciate any and all help!

System Information

  • Operating System: Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel(R) Core™ i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design
  • Citra Version (found in title bar): Citra Nightly 1422
  • Game: Pokemon Moon Version
  • Screenshot of Issue:

This is the extent of what I can screenshot since, as I mentioned, the program exits shortly after attempting to launch Pokemon Moon.

Here’s some issues I found with your log that might help.

  • Enabling Accurate Multiplication is recomended in certain games. If you are experiencing graphical glitches, try enabling this option.

Unfortunately, this suggested solution did not resolve the issue. Are there alternative possible solutions to this problem?

Please test again on the latest Citra Nightly version. If the same issue persists, upload a log file using that Citra version.

Thanks for the reply! I’ve gone ahead and tried again on the latest version of Citra Nightly, experiencing the same issue. I’ve attached the log file here:

Start Citra, then go to File>Open Citra Folder. Then open up the shaders folder and delete the opengl folder found here. Now try your game again.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to have fixed the issue. I’ve attached the log file once again.

Still the same error, sadly. Thanks for the help nonetheless. Is it possible that a fresh dump of the title might be in order here?

Maybe… It kinda bothers me that your GPU isn’t being recorded before the crash, that usually isn’t indicative of a bad dump. Try redumping first, if that doesn’t work, I’d suggest DDUing your current GPU driver and reinstalling it (or installing a more up-to-date one, whichever one applies).

I tried a new dump and, thankfully, it appears that everything’s working well! Thanks so much for your help with this issue, and for Citra and the rest of the team as a whole. It’s an awesome program and I really respect what you’ve all done with it. You can count on my support via Patreon.

Here’s some issues I found with your log that might help.

  • You are running out of date drivers for your GPU. You need to install the most recent driver for your graphics card from Intel’s website. Support for Intel® Graphics

This driver is incredibly out of date. To update, download win64_15.33.53.5161.zip from Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows* [15.33]
Mirror download: https://downloadmirror.intel.com/29969/a08/win64_15.33.53.5161.zip

Then follow this guide to install it: https://www.howtogeek.com/343287/how-to-fix-the-driver-being-installed-is-not-validated-for-this-computer-on-intel-computers/

Furthermore, because your iGPU has driver bugs, you’ll need to use an older version of Citra in order to prevent random freezing and crashing from occurring until you upgrade your hardware:
Download citra-windows-mingw-20191214-ddb7ead.7z from Release nightly-1392: Merge pull request #5020 from jroweboy/dynamic-mf · citra-emu/citra-nightly · GitHub
Extract it using Winrar or 7zip. Put the extracted folder anywhere you want. Now run citra-qt.exe from the folder and run your game.
