I have been stuck on the connecting page for about 15 minutes now with no progress.
I am unable to cancel the loading screen. I have tried restarting the emulation and loading the previous save state, but the previous save state was already when i was attempting to connect to the internet. I do not want to load back the save state before that as i had clocked in about 2 more hours of gameplay i dont want to go to waste…

You cannot exit unfortunately. You need to still save in-game every now and then, do not only rely on save states. You will have to forfeit those two hours.
I had this issue. I had given up and was going to restart and by chance it just loaded up a new game and it had my previous progress loaded into the actual game itself. Dont use the emulation to load. Exit citra, load back in and let it load through pokemon. Dont use the citra to load a file.
